Amateur players are getting the chance to earn a seven-figure prize when they face tennis' top professionals - including world number one Carlos Alcaraz - in a winner-takes-all point prior to the year's first major

Organizers of the year's first Grand Slam have revealed the Million Dollar One Point Slam, which will match 10 amateur players against 22 professionals in a single-elimination format at the Australian Open venue

The Unique Event Will Work

Participants must play 'the classic hand game' to establish who takes the serve or return position, and the competitor securing the point will progress to the next round

The victor of the event will receive £490,000

Contextually, players who made it to the final four of the main draw competitions in the previous year's tournament won over a million Australian dollars

The New York major staged a redesigned, separate mixed doubles tournament in August which motivated top singles players to participate, with the winners receiving one million US dollars

The Melbourne tournament held its debut One Point Slam earlier this year, but the total purse was a smaller amount and it generated little publicity

One top competitor was the sole elite competitor competing, and his progress came to an end when he put the single service opportunity permitted failing to clear the net in his penultimate round

Event Specifics

Organizers have not said exactly how the event will operate, but it is anticipated to follow a comparable structure to the previous version

The professionals will be allowed to serve once and the non-professionals two times - as is the usual procedure in traditional tennis

While it is uncertain how the pairings will work, there will be several competitive phases and the site will be the primary court rather than the smaller Kia Arena

The final stages will take place in a evening slot instead of 1pm local time

Entry Details

Any Australians - or overseas competitors who have enrolled with Tennis Australia - can participate in 'quick-match event' events at their neighborhood facilities

The victors of the grassroots tournaments will then go into a random pairing, with an everyday competitor from every state and territory chosen to compete in the 'championship round' in a night session on the specified date

There will also be a qualifying draw in late year which amateurs, lower ranked pros, famous personalities and athletic celebrities can enter

It begins on the starting date and the successful competitors will go into the following day's 'championship match' with the other eight amateurs and top-ranked athletes

"Whether you're an amateur or a pro, the overall victor will walk away with the prize. Applications will start imminently at venues nationwide"

Tournament officials mentioned there were "further celebrities to be revealed shortly", while the tournament site indicated "celebrities" would be involved
