Slot Offers No Excuses and Vows to Find Way Out of Malaise

Arne Slot declared he needed to “examine my own performance” following Liverpool endured a sixth loss in seven Premier League matches at home to Nottingham Forest and affirmed he would find a solution out of the champions’ slump.

Nottingham Forest, in the relegation zone prior to the match, delivered the biggest win at Liverpool's stadium in their club records as Liverpool fell to an eighth loss in 11 fixtures in every tournament. The British record signing, Alexander Isak, was once more anonymous and the home side argued the defender's opener should have been ruled out for similar reasons to Virgil van Dijk’s chalked-off goal versus City before the international break. But the manager conceded the responsibility rested with him and offered no alibis.

“Nobody wishes to hear me now speaking about refereeing decisions if you are defeated 3-0 at home to Forest,” said the Reds' boss. “I ought to look at myself first and my squad, but it demonstrates you how a score can alter the momentum of a match. Before I was just hoping for us to score a strike. Later we hardly created anything.

“Naturally there is a path forward, especially with the talented footballers we have. Regardless if you win or are beaten when you reflect you are always thinking: ‘Where can we improve, where can we adjust?’ but that is something else from doubting yourself.

“I want to emphasise I am responsible for the current defeats. You are responsible when you are winning but also responsible when you are losing. I can never come up with enough reasons for us to have the outcomes we have. That is not good enough and I am to blame for that.”

Liverpool’s performance unravelled as the coach made several offensive changes when chasing the game. “It was the same away at Forest the previous campaign,” he remarked. “I substituted Ibou [Ibrahima Konaté] off and put on the Portuguese forward and he found the net straight away to equalize at 1-1. Then it was brave, now it’s likely stupid.”

The Anfield side previously were defeated in two successive at Anfield Premier League fixtures by Forest in the sixties. The most recent occasion they suffered consecutive top-flight matches by a three-goal margin was in the mid-60s.

Slot said: “It was extremely poor. Playing at home, conceding 3-0 no matter which opponent you face is a terrible result. Surprising if you look at the first half-hour of the match. I did not witness us producing so much in the initial half-hour maybe the entire season, and the initial occasion they arrived in our box they scored.

“It wasn’t against Manchester City, but in all other fixture we have been the dominant team and were able to generate chances. Recently it is nearly consistently that we miss our chances and the attempts we allow find the net.”
