The British designer Antony Price, the groundbreaking style architect behind many legendary styles worn by musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has sadly died aged 80.

Price was best known for his sculptured silhouettes and performative fashion, such as the light-hued ensembles that became famous from the iconic band Duran Duran's landmark music video for "their hit Rio".

"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' Duran Duran shared a message on social media."

His passing follows shortly after he unveiled his most recent collection in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. The performer Lily Allen walked in a dress that paid homage to the famous black velvet "revenge dress" made famous by the late Princess Diana.

An Enduring Influence

Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price moved to London during the sixties to enroll at the renowned Royal College of Art.

Upon completing his studies, he started his work in menswear at Stirling Copper and was behind the form-fitting, button-fly pants that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger sported during the iconic group's "Gimme Shelter" tour in the late sixties.

He established his eponymous line in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show opened with outfits on model Jerry Hall, who also wore the marriage dress Price designed for her for her nuptials with Sir Mick Jagger.

Partnerships with Stars

A long-time collaborator of David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the iconic jacket the singer wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His trademark skill to fuse menswear and womenswear along with his masterful technique in designing form-fitting garments established him as a "one-of-a-kind talent," as stated by the British Fashion Council.

By the 1990s, he commenced designing pieces for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, including various looks for her tour of the United States after assuming the title.

With a vocation that covered more than five decades, Price staged what would be his last show in London last month in collaboration with the label 16Arlington.

  • Defined Shapes: A hallmark of his work.
  • Performative Style: Shaping the look of rock and pop.
  • Gender-Fluid Fashion: Merging menswear with womenswear.
  • A Client List from Rock to Royalty: Spanning iconic musicians and members of the royal family.

The industry says farewell to a authentic original whose influence on the visual landscape of music remains profoundly felt.
