The Tottenham defender scored on two occasions as Tottenham prolonged their unbeaten run on the road in the top division and delivered the Toffees their first defeat at their new home.

Everton were unbeaten in their five previous fixtures at their new ground at the dockside location, having departed their historic home behind after 133 years at the end of last season.

But Tottenham's leader Van de Ven struck twice from set-pieces in the opening 45 minutes to place their strong form at jeopardy, and they were unable to mount a comeback before Pape Matar Sarr - set up by former Toffees attacker the Brazilian - headed home a final goal to seal the victory.

Jake O'Brien thought he had levelled the scores a short while after the defender's first goal, glancing a bullet header past the Spurs keeper from an set-piece.

Beto, meanwhile, missed a number of chances, while Vicario made a series of excellent saves to ensure the London club went five away games unbeaten in the English top flight.

But the VAR stepped in, instructing Craig Pawson to review the goal on the screen and the official decided that Jack Grealish and Iliman Ndiaye were in offside positions and had interfered with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

The win moves Thomas Frank's side up to third in the Premier League, five points off local foes and leaders Arsenal.

Everton stay 14th and are half a dozen points ahead of the drop zone.

Spurs breakdown: The defender fulfils role at each end of the field

Following a uninspiring midweek performance in the Champions League against the French side, where they managed a only two shots on goal, Frank chose the French striker up front instead of ex-Everton forward the Brazilian.

The new arrival was unable to make much of an impact before being replaced for Richarlison after 60 minutes on the pitch, but it turns out he wasn't needed in the final outcome.

Centre-back the Dutchman converted into an attacking force to be feared.

Spurs' first goal came from a well-worked set-piece play, with Rodrigo Bentancur heading the ball back across the face of goal for an free Van de Ven to head home.

And the captain - stepping up as captain in the Argentine's absence - notched his second in added time as he rose above the England keeper to nod in.

Van de Ven was equally impressive in defensive duties, partnering well with Kevin Danso as the duo dealt superbly with the numerous deliveries sent their way by the opposition.

Toffees breakdown: Everton missing striker's instinct

Everton's new home had been a fortress, but it seems the freshness may have worn off slightly and fans headed to the exits after Sarr's third for Spurs.

The break in Everton's unbeaten home run will not be a major worry for the manager, but their striker situation are.

Beto and Thierno Barry - the Toffees' pair of established strikers - had netted only one league goal combined before the weekend's match.

And they were failed to contribute to that miserable tally on a damp and dreary evening on Merseyside.

The striker's performance was epitomized when he opted to overhead kick a clear chance from close range, even with having room and opportunity to reposition for a more conventional shot that would have tested Vicario.

The substitute, too, failed to influence the game after replacing Beto in the 65th minute.

It was not for a lack of opportunity. Most of Everton's attacks came through Grealish and the forward, who relentlessly delivered dangerous crosses into the Spurs box.

What next for both teams?

The Toffees: Moyes' men head to Sunderland in the Premier League on early November at 20:00 GMT.

Tottenham: The London club go to Newcastle's ground on late October for their next round Carabao Cup tie against Newcastle.
